July 15, 2011 Leave for Eldred, PA

3:45pm - Packed and ready to Leave for Eldred, PA. I wonder what things we forgot!

10 minutes into the trip and I had to turn around in Perrysburg to go back to get Jen's phone. New departure time 4:00 pm. As we are turning around to get Jen's phone, Helen calls and asks where we are at. She was thinking we would be there soon and had 2 pizzas and 3 bins of wings being delivered at 5:30 pm and had invited Uncle Dick and Aunt Patty to visit with us. This is despite the fact that I had talked to her a few days earlier saying we would be there around 8:30 or 9:00 pm. I guess she was anxious to see us.

Jen called to let grandma know we were about an hour away and grandma kept her on the phone for 45 minutes. After about a five hour drive plus a 30 minute Wendy's/gas stop, we arrive in Eldred around 9:45pm. Even though we were still full from dinner, we ate grandma's pizza and ice cream anyway. My grandmother commented that this was her second "mug" of ice cream this evening, but said " Oh well, they make caskets for fat people, too." In both her sweet and demanding self, she told me to "move your butt" so she could get me the spoon she likes to use to scoop the ice cream.

We settled in and had a nice conversation on the couch. Grandma told us a story I had never heard about her and grandpa's first date. She said that she did not like my grandpa much when she first met him. When he arrived at her house to ask her out, rather than giving him a warm greeting she asked bluntly, "what are you doing here? But when he offered to take her to a movie she was excited because she had only seen one movie in her eighteen years of life, and she really liked them. They saw a movie called "Sentimental Journey" that at the end brought her to tears. Seeing my grandma bawling, my grandpa looked at her and asked if she was crying. She replied "a little". Then he commented that it "looked like her bladder was attached to her eyeballs."

Grandma and I continued talking until nearly 1:00 in the morning.
